Hydro GeoAnalyst 2009.1: New Release

Hydro GeoAnalyst* is the all-in-one groundwater data management software that integrates a complete range of easy-to-use groundwater analysis and reporting tools, with a powerful yet extremely flexible database technology.

New improvements:

  • Use your own coordinate system - with support for Local Cartesian Coordinate Systems in the database, map, and cross-sections, you no longer need to convert your coordinate information to a projected system
  • Manage your data wherever you are - the Localization feature will read the system settings on your computer and automatically determine how to format your date and numeric data
  • Precision labeling - when loading data onto the map you now have an option to set the precision (number of decimal places) for all numeric data
  • Report Enhancements
    • Improved graphical resolution - you now have the option to have a higher resolution image of the cross section sent to the Report Editor
    • Increased page flexibility - The Report Editor allows you to more easily adjust the size settings including page, header, and margins
    • Format reports the way you want - with the click of a button, you can pass all your plots to the Report Editor where they will be displayed with the page header and footer information you need for simple and quick reporting

Aquifer Storage and Recovery

Schlumberger Water Services’ aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) systems offer a cost-effective, mass storage solution that lets you take back control of your water supply – naturally. Schlumberger Water Services offers a full range of services and technologies to help you grasp the full extent of your natural underground storage capacity. We help you use existing aquifers and reveal the ability to store billions of gallons of water underground at a fraction of the cost of conventional approaches.

ASR can be applied to domestic/public water supply, mining (aggregate, mineral, and precious gems), industry, energy (oil and gas), agriculture, and desalination plants. Learn more…

Oilfield Water Management

For many oil and gas production projects, the development of water sources for enhanced oil recovery, provision and recycling of frac water, and management, treatment, and disposal of produced water comprise a significant cost burden. Cost-effective techniques for managing oilfield water require a comprehensive understanding of reservoir characteristics, production volumes, hydrogeology, engineering design, and environmental considerations.

Schlumberger Water Services specializes in designing and managing projects to minimize the costs associated with oilfield water and to help our clients comply with regulatory requirements. Learn more…

Schlumberger Water Services releases first book in series Methods in Water Resources Evaluation

Water Supply Development, Aquifer Storage, and Concentrate Disposal for Membrane Water Treatment Facilities

By: Thomas M. Missimer with contributions by Ian C. Watson, Tom Pankratz, Robert G. Maliva

Desalinated water has become a vital source of water for human consumption and irrigation globally. In regions where freshwater is scarce, such as the coastal zones and water shortage areas, desalination is a life-sustaining process. Schlumberger Water Services is committed to the science of desalination and is offering this book as a resource for desalination plant managers and operators, scholars, hydrologists, environmental scientists, and others interested in this critical topic.

Using the UPDATE Statement in Hydro GeoAnalyst

Hydro GeoAnalyst uses a flexible SQL database to store your data. Since an SQL database is used, users have the advantage of generating SQL statements to query data from the database. They may use the Query Builder to assist in generating these statements, however, users with in depth knowledge of SQL can write their own SQL statements to query and modify their data. One of the most useful SQL statements is the UPDATE statement.

The UPDATE statement is used to modify the data within a table. The syntax of this statement can be described as the following:

UPDATE table_name SET column_name = new_value WHERE column_name = some_value

This statement can be particularly useful if data has been imported into the database that contains errors. For example, if lithology information was imported into the database with spelling errors existing within the soil_type field of the lithology table this may cause patterns to be absent within the borehole log plot. The values entered into the soil_type field must match those specified in the Material Specification list in order for the soil patterns to be used. The image below shows an example where the soil type ‘Sand’ has been misspelled and no soil patterns are available.

image1

The UPDATE query can be used to update the spelling of this word so that the soil patterns from the Material Specification list will match the correct soil type. The UPDATE statement can be written within the Query Builder by selecting the SQL View/Preview tab. The UPDATE statement can be written directly within this window.

image1

Once the statement has been written, execute the statement using the ‘Execute SQL Statement’ icon on the toolbar. The UPDATE statement will prompt the database to review the soil_type field within the Lithology table and update any soil types entered as ‘Snad’ to ‘Sand’.

image1

Once the UPDATE query has been executed, refresh the project and the soil_type field will be modified in the database. This will result in the correct soil type and soil pattern being displayed.
