Schlumberger Water Services and the University at Buffalo are pleased to announce a one-day workshop on pumping test design and analysis.  The workshop will take place on June 3 and is designed to give students and groundwater professionals hands-on experience designing and implementing a field scale pumping test using Diver groundwater dataloggers.   Participants will also have to opportunity to review the pumping test data and make interpretations using AquiferTest Pro pumping and slug test analysis software.

MODFLOW-USG Groundwater Modeling Vertical Grid Refinement
MODFLOW-USG gives you the flexibility to focus grid resolution where it counts, using a variety of grid geometries.  As mentioned in an earlier blog post, Quad-Based grids are an attractive option due to their simplicity and rectangular-shaped geometry (using shapes similar to those used in finite difference grids).  This blog article provides a preview of the  Quad-Based grids that are currently being developed in Visual MODFLOW Flex along with a few examples for various applications.

In 2013 Visual MODFLOW Flex demonstrated the power of MODFLOW-USG through the use of Voronoi polygon unstructured grids. By focusing the grid resolution “where it counts”, you can achieve higher accuracy and more efficient run times over structured MODFLOW grids. (See MODFLOW-USG Case Study). Building on the new capabilities of MODFLOW-USG and leveraging the flexibility that comes with a grid-independent conceptual model, we are pleased to demonstrate layer-dependent discretization using Quad-Based UnStructured grids in Visual MODFLOW Flex.

MODFLOW Wall Boundary Condition
Last November marked the release of Visual MODFLOW Flex 2014.1 which introduced support for MODFLOW-USG unstructured grids.   Since then, the simulations software development team at Schlumberger Water Services has been working on developing new features for the next release which is scheduled for June.   Most of the development work has been focused around bringing popular features from the classic interface into the Visual MODFLOW Flex interface, improving usability and extending support for other MODFLOW-USG grid types.   Here is a brief preview of what we have planned for Visual MODFLOW Flex in 2014:

With the release of Visual MODFLOW Flex, we introduced a new streamlined approach to building groundwater models. Along with the traditional numerical modeling approach, we provided groundwater professionals with the option to develop MODFLOW groundwater models from a 3D conceptual model. By incorporating raw GIS data that is completely independent of a numerical grid, the conceptual modeling approach offers many benefits over traditional numerical modeling methods. Despite the benefits, we realize that adopting new workflows can be a daunting task - especially with time constraints and project deadlines looming. To help ease the transition, we have prepared a short guide that compares both modeling workflows side-by-side for each step in the modeling process.
