Visual MODFLOW is often used to model the groundwater conditions at mine sites. These models are intended to assist in the decision making process for issues that are controlled or affected by groundwater. A groundwater model can be used to describe the groundwater flow system at the mine site (Kuchling et al.), assess impacts of various activities such as mine dewatering or baseflow reduction, assess potential exposure to groundwater contamination (Tiwary et al.) and assess mitigation options, and communicate information to regulators and stakeholders.

We are pleased to announce the release of Hydro GeoAnalyst 2014.2.  The new release provides various enhancements and bug fixes.  Key highlights include faster and more efficient data importing,  support for bulk importing of image files (e.g., images of wells) and improved reporting with Microsoft Office.

Visual MODFLOW Plume Migration
Accurate numerical simulation of the movement of dissolved chemicals (solutes) in groundwater requires definition of chemical properties such as dispersion, sorption and species parameters; as well as identification of transport boundaries to add solute to the flow system, initial contaminant conditions, and a flow solution. The flow solution provides groundwater velocities to calculate advection, which is typically the dominant transport process for most groundwater systems. However, dispersion, diffusion and sorption all affect the movement of a contaminant plume.

Schlumberger Water Services (SWS) will attend the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Regional Water Data Workshop 2014. The workshop will be held from September 9 to 12 in Kansas City, Missouri. It provides technical training and professional development for USGS Hydrographers. SWS plans to showcase its latest developments in groundwater monitoring technology including the Diver-NETZ wireless groundwater monitoring system and its suite of Diver groundwater dataloggers.

The new particle tracking program mod-PATH3DU, developed by S.S. Papadopulos & Associates, provides a vital component for interpretation and analysis of MODFLOW-USG groundwater models. This program will be integrated into Visual MODFLOW Flex in a future release. The following images are some of examples of pathline analysis using mod-PATH3DU and UnStructured Grid models (Voronoi and Quad-Based grids) generated by Visual MODFLOW Flex.
