Testimonials:
"I have been importing water quality data into AquaChem, and find it's import functions exceptionally strait forward and easy to use. Thanks for this great, handy product, which is provided to us via the US Office of Surface Mining TIPS software program"
Kirk Waren, Montana Department of Environmental Quality Industrial and Energy Minerals Division
“We expect a considerable saving in both cost and time from our use of the revamped trend analysis in AquaChem 2010. We need to carry out an annual check on trends in our groundwater chemical sampling network; the first time we did this, it took several weeks to check for trends across all sites and all chemicals. Now that AquaChem has the ability to perform batch trend analysis, we expect to be able to repeat this analysis literally overnight!” U.K. Environment Agency
AquaChem’s analysis tools cover a wide range of functions and calculations used for analyzing, interpreting and comparing water quality data. These tools include simple unit transformations, charge balances, statistics and sample mixing to more complex functions such as correlation matrices and geothermometer calculations.
These powerful analytical capabilities are complemented by a comprehensive selection of commonly used plotting techniques to represent the chemical characteristics of aqueous geochemical and water quality data.
The Mann-Kendall test is a trend estimator that can be used to prove if contaminant concentrations are significantly diminishing or rising over time. The version of the Mann-Kendall Test used in AquaChem can be applied for virtually any groundwater parameter, and is a critical tool for long-term monitoring optimization and reporting.
AquaChem Product Details Summary
Data Management
Built around a customizable MS Access database that can be configured to include more than 1000 alphanumeric parameters per sample.
Parameters are divided into the following parameter groups: station description parameters, sample description parameters, measured parameters, and modeled parameters.
Each parameter group contains predefined parameters which can be used to create a customized data structure for your sampling and reporting requirements.
Data may be imported and exported in various formats including MS Access, MS Excel and .TXT files.
Data Analysis
AquaChem uses the common measured values (cations and anions) for each sample to calculate additional geochemical values including water type, sum of Anions, sum of Cations, Ion Balance, TDS, hardness, Alkalinity, Common Ion Ratios, Sodium Adsorption Ratio, Magnesium Hazard, Ozygen saturation and Scaling Indexes such as Langlelier Index, Ryznar Stability Index, Puckorius Scaling Index and Larson-Skoid Index.
Data Analysis features include: Compare Samples, Correlation Matrix, Water Quality samples, Mix Samples, Data Reliability check, Rock Source Deduction.
Statistical Calculations
AquaChem includes a comprehensive list of statistical features, optimized to work with your water quality data set. Statistical features included with this software are: Trend analysis (Mann Kendall, Sen's Test), Outlier Tests (Extreme value, Discordance, Rosner, Walsh test), Test For Normality (Studentized range test, Geary's, Shapiro, D'Agostino test.
Water Quality Modeling
AquaChem provides a link to one of the popular public domain geochemical modeling programs, PHREEQC available from the USGS.
PHREEQC generated values (saturation indicies, activities) can be read back to the database and used for reporting, plotting or statistics.
Plotting, Mapping & Reporting
One of AquaChem's most powerful features is its ability to efficiently manage, create, and graphically display a wide range of water quality data.
Includes a comprehensive selection of more than 23 industry-standard plots including: Piper, Schoeller, Scatter, Box & Wisker, time series, histogram, Stiff, Radial and Pie chart.
AquaChem offers a unique way to interact with graphics and allows for quick identification of points on plots.
Grouped Box and Whisker Plot allows comparing Box and Whisker Station plots belonging to different domains/areas. Ideal for comparing categories of samples collected in a monitoring program. Useful for monitoring/water quality baseline studies.
Stacked Bar Chart shows the temporal changes in the ion balance of major anion/cations. Allows for quick detection of outliers, and provides a simple representation for non-geochemists. Useful for monitoring/water quality baseline studies and QAQC.
Efficiently generate multiple Time Series, Detection Summary, and Box & Whisker Plots using Batch Mode – Generating individual time series plots per well location can be tedious. The batch mode will significantly reduce the time to create these plots, whether you have tens or hundreds of stations. Time series and Box and Whisker plots are universal, and used in nearly all groundwater investigations.
Enhanced Durov Plot with additional parameters (pH and TDS), along with the major ion composition, makes this plot a powerful alternative to the Piper diagram.
Import and display hydrographs of water levels, temperature, precipitation, on time series plots to compare and correlate to trends in water quality
Print Plots to .PDF - The quality of plots printed to PDF has been improved
Database
Link AquaChem project to a Hydro GeoAnalyst (HGA) SQL Database – Data for your AquaChem project can be stored and managed in an HGA SQL database, allowing both programs to share a common database. This allows you to have access to the data analysis and interpretation tools available in HGA (cross-sections, borehole log plots, crosstab queries), and the statistical analysis, plots, and QA/QC capabilities of AquaChem. Any changes made in one program will automatically be reflected in the other program. AquaChem supports the HGA Environmental database model.
Compare samples to U.S. EPA Hardness-Dependent standards – For some metals, the Water Quality guidelines levels issued by U.S. EPA depend on the water hardness. Furthermore, the standard for chronic or acute, as well as for total and dissolved concentrations may be different. AquaChem automatically calculates these 4 levels, providing significant time savings.
Query functions allows searching all samples that exceed user-defined water quality standard – useful for a quick find of samples with exceedences.
Query functions to find samples with the highest or lowest concentration (extremes) of a selected parameter
Query functions now support the use of standard SQL commands, providing the ability to design advanced queries
Export to GoogleEarth TM - well locations and time-varying parameter values can be exported to Google Earth .kml file Chemistry data are shown as a HTML table when clicking on the station symbol in Google Earth. Provides an excellent way of presenting data using web-browsers.
Database summary report on number of stations, samples; for each station: how many samples and in which time period sampled. Per sample: how many parameter, min, max avg values etc, per parameter: how many times was it measured for each station.
Statistics
Efficiently generate multiple Trend Analyses for selected stations and parameters in batch mode. Works with Sen’s Test, Mann-Kendall, Mann-Kendall Seasonal, and Regression Analysis). Export the results CSV, send to a report, or save back to database. Ideal for ensuring compliance with European Water Framework Directives (WFD).
Alert Levels Test allows for detect sites with concentrations above background levels - something not possible with the use of guideline criteria alone.
Improved Analysis and Reporting of Duplicate Samples - Relative Percent Difference (RPD) values exceeding a user specified threshold can be highlighted, for more than two duplicates. QA\QC procedures have duplicate sample analysis as a common requirement. With projects containing 10’s or 100’s of samples, and even a few duplicate samples, analyzing duplicates can be time consuming. In the previous version, the workflow for duplicates was quite tedious, done on a per sample per parameter basis. AquaChem now allows running all samples at once and running analysis on more than 2 duplicates.
Calculators
Convert UTM in Lat/Long and vice-versa; AquaChem only accepts projected (UTM) coordinates
Google Earth requires Lat/Long
Redox water type - Classifies water according to its redox state based on redox sensitive parameters Currently used in Denmark, potential to be used in many countries having problems with contamination triggered by reducing water.
