GW Contour comes complete with four (4) specific data interpolation techniques, all offering robust interpolation solutions for a wide range of groundwater and environmental data types. These data interpolation techniques include:
Natural Neighbor
Among the most robust interpolation methods available to date, and produces a conservative result by finding weighted averages, at each interpolation point, of the functional values associated with the subset of data that are natural neighbors of each interpolation point.
Inverse Distance
Based on the premise that data points are weighted by the inverse of their distance to the estimation point.
This approach has the effect of giving more influence to nearby data points than those farther away, and is ideally suited for projects with tightly populated data points such as small scale monitoring projects, or projects with an abundance for normally distributed data.
Kriging
Applies a statistical weighting method to determine the effect of distance on an interpolated point, and also provides a statistical variance.
Often applied when estimating layer surfaces based on known elevations at specific points.
Used for generating contour maps of topography, defining continuous hydrogeologic and geologic layer elevations, contouring concentration data, etc.
Bilinear
A polished and more common interpolation approach, bilinear interpolation estimates the empty spaces between known points that are spread over a wider radius, thereby providing a visibly smoother result.
Ideally suited for generating contour maps of any environmental surface such as water tables, geologic layers, elevation maps, etc. stored in .GRD format.
Selecting the appropriate interpolation technique depends on a variety of conditions and professional judgment. Ultimately, selecting the ‘most correct’ interpolation method is dependent on your understanding of the data, and the final interpolated results.
Considerations when choosing an interpolation method include:
What does the distribution of points look like?
GW Contour gives you full control and complete flexibility over how you enter and interpolate your data. GW Contour also offers the unique ability to produce particle tracking and velocity vectors.
Velocity Vectors Benefits
Provide a secondary level of assessment when comparing the accuracy of interpolated results
Reviewing historical data using velocity vectors provides an effective means of highlighting changes in the water table or site activities
Velocity vectors graphically emphasize the magnitude and direction of the groundwater flow regime
Identifying turbulent-subsurface flow patterns in areas with fractures
Highlighting preferential pathways for overland flow
Predicting and planning for potential basin and sub-basin catchments areas
Assessing subsurface water divides
Features
Define the number of velocity vector nodes per cell
Select and display velocity vectors using custom, web, or system color palettes
Adjust velocity vector scales to exaggerate vector tails
Display velocity vectors with or without magnitude
Particle Tracking Benefits
GW Contour also offers the ability to produce both forward and reverse particle pathlines, particularly useful in determining the pathway that one or more particles could travel through the subsurface environment. GW Contour offers the tools and features to quickly develop your groundwater flow regime.
Features:
Animate particle movement through the subsurface
Define the number of particles along a line, within a circle, or place individual particles
Define custom time marker intervals, or uniform intervals
Display or hide time markers
Adjust the pathline thickness
Assign colors for forward and reverse pathlines
