Advanced Applications of HGA for Environmental Data Analysis
The first HGA course (HGA I) presented an introduction to Environmental Data Analysis using Hydro GeoAnalyst. This is only the first step in understanding the broad and complex analysis that can be undertaken using a Database Management System (DBMS) like HGA. However, environmental data is often complex in both spatial and temporal terms. To truly understand the scope of an environmental problem the data must be managed by a DBMS that has more advanced tools, like complex querying, 3D interpolation and visualization, and time series charting. This 2-day advanced course presents a more comprehensive look at the HGA database management software, and the tools that allow you to better understand your environmental data.
Advanced Querying
Many advanced applications of Hydro GeoAnalyst require a better understanding of database querying. HGA uses SQL for building queries. This is the standard language for database querying, and is explained in more detail so that HGA users can develop more advanced queries (e.g. finding records with missing data, understanding time-series data, using query math to calculate the relationship between 2 tables, …).
Time Series Plotting
All plots in HGA are based on a database query, which must be written before you open the HGA Plot Designer window. To become a time series plot, the query must have a time-stamp in the x-field. Then, Plot Designer allows you to determine the size, orientation and spacing of your time-series data.
3D Interpolation in HGA
Most environmental data comes from sampling points that vary spatially and vertically. For example, concentration data is sampled in wells that vary in screen location (x, y), elevation and length (z). When we present this type of data (x, y, z, value) we can interpolate the results as a 3-dimensional volume. HGA has a 3D interpolation scheme that allows you to view a plume as a time varying 3D volume in HGA 3D explorer.
Report Editor
The data that is contained in the database is only as good as the Reports that can be generated to describe it. Hydro GeoAnalyst has a Report Editor that allows you to create 2D and 3D views generated in the HGA project and to design how they appear in a report. Once a report is generated, it can be exported to a variety of formats (PDF, XLS, HTML, RTF) for final insertion into the Site Conceptual Model Report.
Advanced HGA Features
Hydro GeoAnalyst also allows you to connect electronically to AquiferTest (for importing remote datalogging results, pumping test analysis) and AquaChem (analysis of geochemistry samples). This feature widens the analytical tools in HGA to provide even greater support for environmental data management requirements.
